Invited Lecture 1

"Software Defined Radio Hardware and Software"- Prof. Tim Brothers, Georgia Institute of Technology

Abstract: This presentation will present an overview of Software Defined Radio (SDR). This will include the basic building blocks of an SDR system including a hardware demonstration of a commercial SDR. The basics of the software, firmware, and hardware will be presented, and the current state of the art will be highlighted. The discussion will then focus on advanced topics for SDR including remote radio head systems and multi-function applications. Finally, we will look into a crystal ball and discuss enabling technologies that will allow the next generation of SDR systems to unlock even greater capabilities.

Bio: Prof. Tim Brothers has been a Professor of the Practice with the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Georgia Institute of Technology since Fall of 2020. Prof. Brothers’ research includes real-time signal processing in the areas of communications, RF signal processing, image processing, EW, and sensor fusion. Prior to joining ECE, Dr. Brothers worked on research, development, and test of advanced sensor systems for Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) and the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division (NAWCWD) in China Lake, California. Dr. Brothers received a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering as well as his BS degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Wyoming in 2007 and 2002, respectively. Dr. Brothers served in the Army National Guard and is a combat veteran from Operation Iraqi Freedom (2004-2005).
