mmWave Acoustics: Tackling a Fundametal Limitation of Acoustic Wave Technologies

As 5G technology advances, there is a growing emphasis on acoustic wave (AW) devices that operate at frequencies above 10 GHz and exhibit high electromechanical coupling coefficients (K2). This presentation will examine the fundamental frequency limitations of current commercial acoustic wave technologies, focusing on aspects such as coupling, quality factor (Q), and power handling. We will explore the constraints faced by both fundamental mode and high overtone mode bulk acoustic wave devices at millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequencies, with particular attention to the freq × K2 limit. The discussion will cover the theoretical foundations of these limitations and present innovative strategies to break the traditional freq × K2 barrier. The session will conclude with an overview of cutting-edge research that applies these theoretical advancements to push the boundaries of next-generation mmWave acoustic technologies.
