Understanding the Harmonic Balance Simulation Technique for use in the Waveform Engineering of Advanced GaN Power Amplifiers

Early in the design process of optimal power amplifiers, the harmonic balance simulation method is used to quantify the tradeoff between linearity and efficiency thereby making it an invaluable tool both design practitioners and researchers. This presentation provides an overview of the harmonic balance technique with sufficient detail for RF designers to understand and appreciate harmonic balance, develop their models suitable for harmonic balance simulation, and be confident in the technique for the design and exploration of advanced waveform-engineered amplifiers. Examples are drawn from GaN semiconductor devices and will include the design of Doherty power amplifiers suitable for cellular infrastructure applications.
