Advanced Coupling Techniques for Low-Noise and Quadrature Oscillat

This talk explores oscillator coupling as a powerful tool to improve phase noise and generate accurate quadrature carriers. Two CMOS oscillator architectures are examined, demonstrating how coupling can enhance phase-noise performance while preserving flexibility and efficiency. A 12-GHz reconfigurable multicore DCO demonstrates how activating different numbers of coupled cores enables dynamic power–noise trade-offs without degrading overall efficiency. A second design, a 24–29 GHz quadrature VCO based on a coupled-PLL approach, overcomes the traditional trade-off between phase noise and quadrature accuracy. Together, these works illustrate how innovative coupling and synchronization techniques enable scalable, low-noise frequency generation in advanced CMOS technologies.
