Measurement and Qualification of RF Performance Characteristics of Cryogenic Low-Noise Amplifiers in the Context of Small Series Production

Instrumentation projects in radio astronomy have reached production scales of hundreds of units, with a further increase expected in the near future. In particular this applies to the performance critical cryogenic components of the receivers and their expensive qualification testing. The presentation will discuss measurement and qualification of our cryogenic LNA with example given by the production of state-of-the-art cryogenic extended W-band (67–116GHz) LNAs for the ALMA Band 2 receiver wideband sensitivity upgrade. Main RF performance characteristics such as the effective noise temperature, two-port S-parameters, amplitude and phase stability are verified during cryogenic operation and evaluated for compliance.
