KEYNOTE: Interaction of EM-Fields with Human Body for Efficient Communication: Body as a Wire and Body as a Transmission-Line

Our recent work has developed Electro-Quasistatic Human Body Communication (EQS-HBC), a method for localizing signals within the body using low-frequency transmission, thereby making it extremely difficult for a nearby eavesdropper to intercept critical private data, thus producing a covert communication channel, i.e., the human body as a ‘wire’ along with reducing interference and providing 100× more efficient communication than Bluetooth. Further, beyond EQS frequencies, it has been shown that the body can act as a transmission line leading to body resonance human body communication with lower channel loss and wider bandwidth promising 100’s of Mbps communication. We will compare and contrast both EQS and Body-Resonance modes with traditional radiative EM communication around the human body.
