Advances in All-Digital RF Chains: From Delta-Sigma-Based Transmitters to PWM-Based Receivers

This talk discusses recent progress in all-digital RF architectures, considering the complete transmission-reception chain. On the transmitter side, advances in delta-sigma modulation are presented, enabling efficient digital-to-RF signal generation with enhanced spectral characteristics. On the receiver side, a complementary pulse-width modulation (PWM) approach is presented, providing a fully digital alternative for RF-to-baseband conversion. The combination of delta-sigma transmitters and PWM-based receivers outlines a consistent all-digital paradigm, highlighting design trade-offs, implementation challenges, and opportunities for scalable, low-power, and high-performance wireless communication systems.
