Aline Eid, Assistant Professor, University of Michigan
I AM...building the future!
What made you want to work in this industry?
I have always been one to like a good challenge and this discipline, dominated by men, appealed to my daring character. I was also fascinated by the historical breakthroughs of the giants of the field like Faraday, Maxwell, and Tesla (to name only a few) whose shoulders we stand on, I delved deeper into studying the critical technologies enabled by electromagnetics, such as the telegraph, radio, radar, and wireless power. From the low megahertz used by Hertz in his first wireless experiments to the hundreds of terahertz being arduously generated by today’s pioneers, electromagnetics offers a wide palette of scales, regimes, and applications to research and explore–it is really exciting!
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite aspect of being an Assistant Professor lies in the unparalleled freedom to delve into transformative research areas that not only push the boundaries of knowledge but also have the potential to make a significant impact on society. I enjoy being able to inspire and motivate my students (via research and teaching), ignite curiosity, and spark their interest. I find it gratifying to be able to make a difference in their lives and watch them grow personally and intellectually.
What are you most excited about for IMS2024?
The Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition! I might be biased… well, I am, since this experience has changed the way I communicate my research to people in and outside my field so that it may reach the broadest and most diverse populations and make its greatest possible impact. I was once a competitor and a winner (back in IMS 2019) and now I have the privilege to serve as a co-chair and motivate students to deliver their best! IMS is a one of a kind conference, but 3MT is just magical!
